On December 17, 2014, I sat down with Jamyla Bennu of Oyin Handmade as part of the first edition of Dream Makers. This new series is my offering to continue to humanize the process of branding and success. My hope is that this series gives everyone who attends, a chance to see past the logo and branding and into the person and their experiences. As I said in a previous post, I was interested in talking to Jamyla because she is an example f how consistency over time pays off. I also had a feeling the conversation would be a great deal of fun.

Needless to say, Jamyla did not disappoint! With a cool and easy manner, she shared personal anecdotes about: growing up in a home where creativity was a natural and expected form of expression, meeting her husband and business partner Pierre, the joyous lunacy of motherhood and the awe of being able to do what she loves for a living. During the interview, my respect only grew for The Bennus as Jamyla weaved a tale of insight, destiny, faith and hard work. Two highly creative people, who once they found each other, made a pledge to support one another’s pursuits. Admitting that of course it isn’t always roses, Jamyla also shared some key low points and how those moments further empowered her and her resolve to make the dream happen. Here are some highlights we tweeted during the night:

The audience was just as engaged and added to the conversation with their own burning questions:

If you missed this first one, no worries! We taped the entire evening and will be sharing highlights in January. In the meantime, consider taking a trip  up to Baltimore on Sunday, January 11th, to meet the maven herself for their monthly pop-up shopping experience.
