01 Apr Event Pick! Marvin Gaye Day
Sheldon Scott, is one of our favorite Creatives and an integral part of the U Street Corridor nightlife scene. It really is because of him that this now annual event exists and I encourage all of you to support his efforts to honor a native Washingtonian and in some ways, forgotten son-the illustrious Marvin Gaye. This event is free and open to the public, but space is limited, so early arrival is suggested.
On Tuesday, April 2nd, the day will begin with the planting of legacy trees from the original Cherry Blossom trees planted over 100 years ago on the Tidal Basin. Marvin Gaye’s family, friends and colleagues will attend the planting of the sapling in honor of Marvin.
The evening celebration will begin at 4pm, on the second floor of Marvin restaurant and will be headlined by Marvin’s original band, “The Marquees”. Featured musical guests of the evening are Martin Luther and Maimouna Youssef. Marvin’s long-time musical director, Gordon “Guitar” Banks will lead a karaoke-style jam session with area artists: Tamara Wellons, Ne’a Posey, Allison Carney, Sol Edler, Kenny Wesley and Wes Felton.
Musical Artist BARSHEEM, has recently joined the bill as well as filmmaker Daimian Bailey, who will premiere his short-film, “MUSIC: A Marvin Gaye Story”. DJ John Morales of M+M will be spinning rare, unreleased Marvin Gaye tracks will round out the evening.
100% of the event’s proceeds will be donated to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.
